Discombobulator™ vs Legacy Systems (CHAMP, HIJENKS, Leonidas) — Compact Tactical HPM Comparison
How does the Discombobulator™ stack up against CHAMP, HIJENKS, Epirus Leonidas, AFRL THOR, and Raytheon Phaser? A side-by-side compact tactical HPM comparison.
The legacy HPM landscape
High-power microwave weapons are not new, but until recently they came in two flavors: large cruise-missile or air-launched systems (CHAMP, HIJENKS) designed for one-way standoff missions, and ground-based counter-drone arrays (Epirus Leonidas, AFRL THOR, Raytheon Phaser) built to defend fixed sites. Neither fits on a tactical drone. The Discombobulator™ is the first HPM weapon engineered from the ground up for drone mounting — and the differences show up in every meaningful parameter.
Compact tactical HPM comparison
Published/open-source parameters. Legacy systems are single-shot or fixed-site; the Discombobulator™ is a reusable airborne pod.

The SWaP advantage
Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) is the binding constraint for any airborne payload. At 12–35 kg and 2–8 kW draw, the Discombobulator™ fits within the payload budget of widely available Group 3–4 UAS. Legacy air-launched HPM systems are an order of magnitude heavier and cannot be carried by tactical drones at all. This is the difference between a scarce, strategic asset and a distributed, tactical one — between one HPM shot per mission and many.
The AI and agility advantage
Two capabilities set the Discombobulator™ apart from every system in the table. First, onboard AI targeting: a Jetson Orin NX running YOLOv8 plus RF fingerprinting classifies targets and selects coupling frequencies in real time, something none of the legacy or ground systems do. Second, frequency agility across 2–6 GHz: instead of a single fixed band, the Discombobulator™ sweeps to find the resonant coupling frequency for each target, dramatically increasing the probability of effect against hardened electronics. Together, AI plus agility turn HPM from a blunt, single-frequency munition into a precise, adaptive electromagnetic weapon — which is exactly why a small pod can outperform much larger legacy systems.
